Buhari commissions ‘Made-in-Nigeria’ vessel, other projects in Lagos

President Muhammadu Buhari has officially commissioned seven Navy ships, including some boats and helicopters to boost the Naval fleets.

The commissioning/induction took place at the Nigerian Navy Dockyard, Lagos, yesterday.

Among the ships inducted includes NNS Oji, NNS Lana, NNS Aba, NNS Sokoto, NNS Osun, NNS Kano, NNS Ikenne, some boats, and one helicopter. NNS Oji was built locally by the Nigerian Navy in line with the local content policy of the Federal Government.

While inducting the ships, President Buhari said it became manifest as a result of his administration’s commitment to boost the capacity of the Nigerian maritime domain, especially its anti-piracy law as well as deepening the local content policy of the government.

According to the President, given Nigeria’s high dependence on oil and gas revenue, the Navy remains a major contributor to the national economy.

Recall that from 2015 till date, this is the third induction of locally built ships in Nigeria. Local shipbuilding could be traced back to the 1960s, while the Federal Government acquired the Naval Dockyard in 1965.

The indigenously constructed SDB, NNS Oji, is the third of its series to be locally built at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Lagos, solely by Navy engineers after the successes of NNS Adoni, and NNS Karaduwa, commissioned in 2016 by President Buhari.
