A renewed wave of public outrage has swept across Nigeria, as citizens, activists, celebrities, and civil society groups revived the #BringBackOurStudents campaign following fresh abductions of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states.

The movement emerged as many Nigerians rejected official Children’s Day goodwill messages, insisting that government speeches cannot replace urgent action against worsening insecurity targeting schools and children. The campaign draws painful memories from the 2014 #BringBackOurGirls movement after the abduction of 276 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram in Borno State.

This latest outrage follows the kidnapping of dozens of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire local government area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026, alongside earlier abductions in Borno communities affected by insurgency attacks.

Prominent voices, including former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili, accused political leaders of offering ceremonial sympathy while insecurity continues to traumatize families nationwide. Celebrities and rights groups also questioned how Nigeria can celebrate Children’s Day while many children remain in captivity.

They said the renewed wave of school attacks shows that insecurity in the country remains far from over despite repeated assurances from government officials that security agencies are making progress in tackling terrorism and kidnapping.

A social commentator, Harry Da Diegot, on X wrote: ‘’@trigottistaMay 27th and Nigerian children are scattered across bushes in terrorists’ den This year, we ask Tinubu to #BringBackOurStudents.”

Security experts warn that repeated attacks on schools risk deepening fear, disrupting education, and damaging public confidence in government protection efforts.

Many Nigerians now demand stronger intelligence operations, school security reforms, and immediate rescue efforts instead of repeated assurances from political leaders.
