B’Haram commanders linked to Oyo school abduction

Oyo school abduction

…As rescue mission claims 3 soldiers

Security sources have identified two senior Boko Haram commanders, as key figures behind the abduction of pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire LGS of Oyo state, while ongoing rescue operations have reportedly claimed the lives of three soldiers.

Recall that the victims were kidnapped on May 15 from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Esiele. At least 42 pupils and staff, including a principal, were taken. One of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was killed a day later.

According to sources involved in the operation, the terrorists, believed to be members of Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (a.k.a Boko Haram), are currently trapped within the Oyo National Park, with security forces blocking potential escape routes.

The abductors have reportedly demanded the release of two Boko Haram commanders – Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a or Abbas Mukhtar, and his deputy, Abubakar Abba, alias Isah Adam or Mahmud Al-Nigeri – in exchange for the hostages. The government, however, has maintained its position against negotiating with terrorists.

Security operatives said the rescue mission has been complicated by the planting of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), difficult terrain, and the terrorists’ frequent relocation of the captives. Troops have reportedly engaged the terrorists in at least two gun battles, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers.

Sources also alleged that the group has intensified attacks in other parts of the country in an attempt to divert security attention and stretch available resources. The abductors are said to be using the hostages as human shields, making a direct assault risky.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde earlier confirmed casualties among security personnel involved in the operation, including a Nigerian Army lieutenant.

Military experts have described the renewed attacks as a deliberate diversionary tactic and urged security agencies to remain focused on rescuing the hostages. They also called for improved intelligence gathering, greater use of aerial surveillance, and enhanced coordination among security agencies.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government said it would continue to limit public disclosure of operational details to avoid endangering the lives of the abducted pupils and teachers. Officials insist efforts to secure their safe rescue remain ongoing.
