The Interim Chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria, (IBAN) has called on the new Director-General National Broadcasting Commission, (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, to urgently commence the move to roll-out a pilot for Digital Radio services in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt.

The IBAN Chairman made his call to newsmen on the sidelines of the NBC Stakeholders meeting on Wednesday, as part of the solutions to reduce the high cost of operating the analogue transmitters and shortage of analogue frequencies in these viable cities in the country.

Ramalan said the it would assist NBC licence radio stations in the growing competition from satellite radio, iPods and the Internet.

The Association’s goal, he said, is to offer new and compelling content using “high-definition” digital radio technology which produces CD-quality sound and eliminates the static, hiss and fades associated with analog signals.

Ramalan further said that part of the many advantages of the digital radio technology are wider coverge, new business opportunities and suppression of entry barriers, while pointing out that the NBC will reap the opportunity of increased revenue-generatiion for the Government.
