A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rufa’i Ahmed Alƙali, has stirred fresh debate over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, describing it as a “moral burden” for the North.

Speaking in a published interview yesterday, Alƙali addressed a range of pressing political issues, including Tinubu’s electoral prospects, zoning controversies, and recent political realignments such as developments involving Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Reflecting on his experience as a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Alƙali was asked whether his past role influences his current assessment of Tinubu’s chances in 2027. He was also queried on concerns that some public endorsements of the president may not reflect genuine political loyalty.

In his response, Alƙali emphasised that the question of Tinubu’s re-election goes beyond conventional politics, carrying what he described as a significant moral implication – particularly for Northern Nigeria.

He noted that historical ties, regional expectations, and longstanding political arrangements continue to shape perceptions of leadership continuity and electoral support.

According to him, these underlying dynamics complicate the North’s stance, turning what might appear as a straightforward political decision into a deeper question of obligation and principle.
