Northern elites, under the League of Northern Democrats (LND) are exploring alternatives to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, with growing discontent over his administration.

Key figures such ad former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, whose popularity is rising in the region, are gaining traction. Former President Muhammadu Buhari and other northern leaders are reportedly aligning with Atiku.
Meanwhile, some northern groups are pushing for the return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who could serve only one more term. Political heavyweights, including Nasir el-Rufai and Rabiu Kwankwaso, are also engaging in strategic meetings, signaling a potential realignment to challenge Tinubu in 2027.
learnt from reliable northern sources that Atiku Abubakar, former vice president and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election is gaining support across party lines in the region, with former President Muhammadu Buhari also said to have switched support to him.
Also, the profile of Hamza Al-Mustapha, 64, a retired Army Major, who served as Chief Security Officer to the Late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, from 1993 until his death on 8 June 1998, is also rapidly growing.

In recent weeks, Atiku had held strategic meetings with Buhari, Tinubu’s predecessor; Ibrahim Babangida, (IBB) and AbdulSalami Abubakar, former military heads of state, etc, while individuals like former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufa’i, former Kano governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who were hitherto in different political platforms, have held strategic meetings in what is gathered, are part of an on-going political realignment in the region ahead of 2027.
The North, which heavily supported Tinubu in the 2023 election, is experiencing widespread frustration with his governance, leading to internal divisions and calls for change.
