The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that it has the capacity to electronically transmit results for the 2027 elections, but Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan cautioned that a “100 percent perfect election” may not be achievable.

Amupitan made the remarks on Sunday, during a live Citizens’ Town Hall discussion on the Electoral Act 2026, titled: ‘What it Means for Your Votes and the 2027 Elections, anchored by Yiaga Africa. Political leaders present included APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, LP Interim Chairman, Nenadi Usman, former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili, and Senator Ireti Kingibe.
While affirming INEC’s ability to transmit results electronically, Amupitan noted real-time transmission remains challenging in hard-to-reach areas. He cited the recent FCT Area Council elections, whereby delays occurred in Kabi Ward due to poor terrain and network accessibility.
According to him, “Transmission itself is not the problem. The real issue is logistics and network adequacy. Your election can only be as good as your logistics.” He expressed confidence that the 2027 elections would improve on past polls, highlighting rising voter awareness and public demand for accountability.

In preparation for 2027, INEC has begun a comprehensive review of its regulations and guidelines for political parties to strengthen oversight, reduce disputes, and enhance public confidence. The technical workshop involves national commissioners, directors, legal experts, and electoral administrators.
Amupitan emphasised that the reforms focus on: ‘Transparent party operations’; Clear compliance and reporting obligations’; ‘Financial accountability and dispute prevention’ and ‘Inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities’.
Ahead of the elections, major political parties are rolling out digital membership registration exercises: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – Nationwide registration begins Monday, March 2, 2026, for three weeks. Members and the public can register at ward, chapter, and state offices.
African Democratic Congress (ADC) – Free online registration continues via www.adcregistration.ng, allowing members to revalidate and update information to comply with the Electoral Act 2026. All Progressives Congress (APC) – May resume e-registration soon to accommodate more members under the new digital requirements.
The Electoral Act 2026 mandates that political parties submit comprehensive digital membership registers to INEC by April 2, 2026.
Amupitan concluded that these measures, coupled with enhanced voter-education and party regulation aim to ensure credible elections, transparent results, and greater public trust in Nigeria’s democratic process in 2027.
