President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday assured the international community of his administration`s readiness to hand over the reins of power to winners of a free and fair general election in Nigeria, come 2023.
The president also declared that democratic rule in the West African sub-region is currently being threatened by an undemocratic takeover of governments by the military.
According to President Buhari, “Since assuming office in 2015, we have been able to introduce mechanisms to ensure free, fair and credible elections. We have strengthened our key anti-corruption agencies, in collaboration with international partners and have undertaken several anti-corruption measures and initiatives”.
He further stated that Nigeria continues to face security challenges that pose a threat to democracy. He, therefore, “called on global partners to support our efforts in tackling insurgency and terrorism”.
