The Federal Government has suspended the issuance of implementation guidelines for Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws following uncertainty over the final approved version of the legislation. The Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this during the ‘2026 Economic Outlook’ event organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, (ICAN), in Lagos. According to him, the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have been directed to halt all implementation processes until clarity is achieved on the authentic version of the laws. Atiku’s aide questions presidential air fleet management under Tinubu
A media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Paul Ibe, has questioned Nigeria’s presidential air fleet management under President Bola Tinubu. In a post on his official X account yesterday, Ibe detailed the presidency’s purchase of a used Airbus A330 (5N-FGA) for $100 million in 2024 to replace the aging Boeing 737 (5N-FGT). He also asked questions about unexplained shifts to a Luxaviation-chartered Boeing 737 (T7-NAS) and the old 737’s recent reregistration to T7-ZMK, suggesting an opaque potential sale. “Using a chartered aircraft for presential transport has significant implications…

With Nigeria less than two years away from national elections, a U.S.-based pro-democracy group has issued an unusually blunt proposal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: declare a ‘state of emergency’ across northern Nigeria, and formally invite the United States to deploy special operations forces to help restore security. In an open proposal addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Democratic Coalition, (NADECO) USA called for a six-month state of emergency across northern Nigeria and urged the government to formally invite the United States to provide limited military assistance, including…
Read More‘Heavy taxes, low wages, rising debt threaten stability’ – NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), has warned that heavy taxation, low wages and the country’s growing debt burden pose serious threats to Nigeria’s economic and democratic stability, as it strongly condemned the Federal Government’s newly introduced tax laws. In a statement issued yesterday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, described the new tax regime as regressive and harmful to workers and low-income Nigerians, arguing that the policies worsen poverty and deepen inequality at a time when citizens are already grappling with high inflation and declining purchasing power. Ajaero faulted the process that…

The African Democratic Congress, (ADC), has criticised the silence of President Bola Tinubu and his government over recent developments in Venezuela, describing it as embarrassing and damaging to Nigeria’s international standing. In a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the action taken by President Donald Trump, of the United States, against Nicolas Maduro and his wife should serve as a warning to governments it described as lacking legitimacy. The party said the failure of Nigeria to react more than 48 hours after the…

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has raised the alarm over the incapacity of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to conduct free, fair and credible elections in 2027, following the forgery of the controversial tax laws. In a New Year statement issued yesterday, Abubakar said: “A government capable of forging or tampering with laws cannot be trusted to conduct free and fair elections in 2027. Nothing better captures the decay of this government than the scandal of a forged tax law, shamelessly branded a ‘reform’. Even more disturbing was the President’s refusal to…

The controversy surrounding Nigeria’s new tax reform laws intensified yesterday, as the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) and prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), separately warned the Federal Government against implementing the laws from January 1, 2026, amid unresolved allegations of post-legislative alterations. Recall that President Tinubu, in a statement signed on Tuesday, had reaffirmed that the implementation of the tax reforms would proceed as scheduled from January 1, 2026, describing them as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive and robust fiscal foundation”, and insisting that no…

The National Association of Nigerian Students, (NANS), has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend the planned implementation of the newly introduced Tax Reform Law, citing poor public enlightenment and alleged alterations to the version passed by the 10th National Assembly. The student body made the demand in an issued statement signed by its National President, Olushola Oladoja yesterday, ahead of the law’s scheduled commencement on January 1, 2026. While acknowledging the importance of tax reforms to national development, NANS said the current implementation process was “fundamentally flawed, poorly…

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that the implementation of the new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, insisting there will be no postponement despite mounting controversy and calls for a delay over alleged irregularities in the legislative process. However, in response to public concerns surrounding the passage, presidential assent and gazetting of the laws, the leadership of the 10th National Assembly has directed the Clerk to re-gazette the Tax Acts, and issue Certified True Copies of the versions duly passed by both chambers. The firm stance by the…
