Telecom operators in Nigeria, (telcos), notably MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9Mobile, have insisted on calls for an upward tariff review in a move to offset the soaring costs of operation and investment in the sector. This demand comes after 11 years of stability in tariffs, during which the industry has faced significant increases in operational costs and investments in network expansion and upgrades. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), has indicated that telecoms tariff hike is imminent given the current economic realities in Nigeria. ALTON chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, gave the indication in Lagos, during a stakeholders’ meeting with the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida. Telecommunications firms, (Telcos), have expressed readiness to introduce price differentials in regions hostile to their operations. The operators, under the aegis of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria, (ALTON), therefore, issued a seven-day warning and appealed to the Federal Government to urgently intervene on the challenges plaguing the sector.
