60% of extreme poor live in Nigeria, other S/Saharan African countries — World Bank

The World Bank Group has disclosed that Sub-Saharan Africa now accounts for 60% of all people in extreme poverty —389 million, more than any other region.  The Bank, in its new study, tagged: ‘Poverty and Shared Prosperity Report‘, stated that “most of this extreme poor live in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa. Nigeria ranks 11th among most miserable countries in the world – Report

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has been ranked 11th in Hanke’s 2021 Annual Misery Index. The figures, published on the verified Twitter handle of a Professor of Applied Economics at John Hopkins University in the US, Steve Hanke, showed that Nigeria was the fourth most miserable country in Africa last year, only behind Sudan, Zimbabwe and Angola. According to the report, the five least miserable countries were Brunei, Switzerland, China, Taiwan, and Japan. ‘4 out of ten Nigerians live below poverty line’ – World Bank

The World Bank has disclosed that four out of every 10 Nigerians currently live below the poverty line. The global financial institution, which disclosed this in its recent report titled: ‘A Better Future for All Nigerians: Nigeria Poverty Assessment 2022,’ said Nigeria currently needs long-term reforms to foster and sustain pro-poor growth and raise citizens out of poverty.
