The Nigerian Bar Association, (NBA), has urged the National Assembly to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the Electoral Amendment Bill. The NBA had issued this statement a few days before President Buhari in a letter to the National Assembly on Tuesday, declined his assent to the Bill. Nigerian Bar Association’s first Vice-President, John Aikpokpo-Martins has stated that Nigeria’s Constitution allows the crushing of secessionists. Aikpokpo-Martins, who disclosed this in a post on his Facebook page at the weekend, said any elected President of Nigeria is constitutionally bound to crush secessionists like and Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) and Nnamdi Kanu. Some aggrieved Northern lawyers have constituted a new association named New Nigerian Bar Association, NNBA, after pulling out of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA. The lawyers also accused the NBA of been biased given the controversy that ensued after it invited the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai following a petition against the governor.
