Plateau: Six killed, 2 injured as gunmen ambush miners

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia have killed six miners and injured two in Wereng community, Riyom local government area of Plateau State.

The latest attack occurred almost a week after eight persons were brutally killed at a mining site in Kuru, Jos-South local government area of the State.

It was gathered that the eight miners were waylaid at about 7:45 pm on Thursday, on their way home from a mining site.

A source close to the community told newsmen that the miners stopped at Wereng community to rest before they would proceed with their journey to the next village. “While they were resting the gunmen numbering about 15 who probably have been monitoring them appeared and shot at them at close range. They killed six of them on the spot while two sustained injuries, now receiving treatment at the Christian Hospital in Vom, Jos-South local government area”, the source stated.

The attackers also reportedly destroyed farms and macheted some people while trying to escape after the dastardly act.

The Chairman, Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation, Gyang Dudu, who confirmed the attack said there was a security alert that the community would be attacked three days before the incident.

Similarly, the State’s Police Command has confirmed the killing of six persons by gunmen in Wereng community, Riyom local government area of the State.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday in Jos. According to him, the incident occurred on Thursday night at a drinking joint.

“More personnel have been deployed to ensure that normalcy is restored and to avert further breakdown of law and order in the village,” he said

He said the Command had commenced investigation to unravel the circumstances behind the attack and to also bring the perpetrators to book.

He called on residents of the community to be law-abiding and provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals by security agencies.
