The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking recognition of the party’s interim National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Tanimu Turaki.
In the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 4, the PDP BoT asked the court to compel INEC to update its records and publish the Turaki-led NWC, whose details were submitted to the Commission on May 4.
The plaintiffs, including former Senate President Wabara, ex-Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana and Chief Olabode George, argued that INEC is legally bound to recognise the interim leadership in line with existing court judgments.
The suit follows a June 3 Court of Appeal ruling that set aside parts of an earlier Federal High Court judgment which had recognised a rival PDP caretaker committee aligned with Samuel Anyanwu.
The BoT maintained that the interim NWC was constituted after court rulings nullified the party’s 2025 national convention and upheld the suspension of some key party officials.
It accused INEC of refusing to update its records despite receiving official notifications and demanded an order directing the Commission to recognise and engage only with the Turaki-led NWC pending a valid national convention.
The case has yet to be assigned to a judge.
