MURIC berates CAN

Calls it hypocritical

The Muslim Rights Concern, (MURIC), has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of hypocrisy over its recent dismissal of reports alleging a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

In a statement issued yesterday in Kano, its State Chairman, Hassan Sani Indabawa said CAN’s new stance was “self-serving”, coming after years of silence while some Christian leaders allegedly misled foreign governments about religious persecution in the country.

He mentioned Bishops Oliver Dashe Doeme, Matthew Kukah, and Wilfred Anagbe among those who reportedly made presentations to U.S. and European bodies, which MURIC said helped fuel the perception that Christians were being targeted in Nigeria.

Indabawa noted that such claims have contributed to the U.S. government’s current consideration of Nigeria for designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for alleged religious intolerance.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the clerics “to undo the misinformation,” describing the situation as “karma playing out”.

The CPC designation, if approved, could expose Nigeria to U.S. diplomatic sanctions over alleged intolerance and human rights concerns.
