The Presidency has dismissed speculations that former President Goodluck Jonathan may contest the 2027 election, insisting his “disastrous record” in office will block any comeback.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, reacting to ex-minister Jerry Gana’s claim that Jonathan would run under the PDP, described the idea as “delusional”. He argued that Jonathan’s administration left behind economic ruin, massive corruption, depleted reserves and unpaid salaries, despite record oil earnings.
Onanuga said Jonathan may also face constitutional hurdles, having been sworn in twice. He warned him not to be misled by PDP loyalists, predicting he would be abandoned mid-race as in 2015.
By contrast, Onanuga praised President Bola Tinubu’s “bold reforms” and economic gains, citing falling inflation, growing reserves, and improved investor confidence.
“Jonathan and others are free to run,” he said, “but Nigerians, who remember the past, will not let them wreck the economy again”.
