Insecurity: CSO threatens protest, gives Buhari 2-week ultimatum to sack Monguno

A civil society organisation (CSO), The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA), has threatened to “occupy the office” of the National Security Adviser (NSA) if President Muhammadu Buhari fails to sack him.

The group had earlier asked the NSA, Babagana Monguno, to resign over the insecurity in the country. On Sunday, a Senator representing Niger-East, Sani Musa, also criticised the NSA for not being the first to inform President Buhari of a threat by bandits to kidnap him.

In a statement issued on Monday, signed by the AYA spokesman, Mohammed Danlami, the group also urged the President to seek the support of international communities in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

The statement read in part: “Available evidence points to the fact that our numerous generals without war experience can’t fight the ragtag terrorists who have taken charge of rural areas and are now threatening the nation capital, including Mr. President and Governor el-Rufa’i with kidnap.

“The recent spates of attacks and killings in Abuja, the nation’s capital, which ought to be the last place to fall in the case of any war, shows that things have fallen apart and terrorist elements seemed to be reigning supreme in the land. The Assembly urged Mr. President to seek foreign help in his bid to make Nigeria a safer place. Nigerians cannot continue to fold their arms and watch their loved ones being abducted or killed, with little or no effort from the powers that be”.

The group added that it may mobilise its members in the northern part of the country to defend themselves against criminals if the situation continues unabated.
