Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the intervention yesterday in Abuja  during the inauguration of the Implementation Committee on TETFund Special High-Impact Intervention Projects.

The initiative, to be implemented through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), is aimed at upgrading engineering and technology faculties in Federal Universities of Technology and conventional universities nationwide.

The universities selected for the ₦4 billion intervention include: Federal University of Technology Minna; Federal University of Technology Akure; Federal University of Technology Ɓaɓura; Federal University of Technology Ikot-Abasi; Federal University of Technology Owerri.

Others are Nigerian Army University Biu; African Aviation and Aerospace University; Shehu Shagari University of Education; Enugu State University of Science and Technology, and University of Ilesha.

According to Alausa, the funds will be used to upgrade existing facilities or construct new engineering workshops where necessary.

The Minister said the High-Impact Intervention Project is designed to modernise laboratories, workshops and research facilities, positioning institutions as centres of innovation and practical problem-solving. He stressed that funding alone would not guarantee success, emphasising strict monitoring, transparency and accountability.

Alausa noted that the intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, which prioritises skills development and economic diversification. He further disclosed that an additional ₦20 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 TETFund guidelines to upgrade engineering facilities in other selected institutions.

With ₦48 billion already committed — and more funding on the way — the government says the goal is clear: equip Nigerian universities with the tools needed to produce industry-ready engineers and drive national development.
