President Muhammadu Buhari has said that despite his administrations swift response to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force, some Nigerians mistook such action as weakness.
Buhari made this known in a live radio and television broadcast yesterday evening.
Addressing Nigerians, the President said his government listened to, and carefully evaluated the five-point demands of the protesters. “And, having accepted them, we immediately scrapped SARS, and put measures in place to address the other demands of our youth.
President Buhari called on the international community “to know all facts” following widespread condemnation over the alleged deaths of anti-police brutality protesters.
Earlier, National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno, told reporters the president had directed all security agencies to operate within “the confines of legality” and “not to do anything that will aggravate the situation”.
In an attempt to address the shooting, killings and the on-going vandalism in various parts of the country, President Buhari at the Security Council meeting yesterday, directed the law enforcement agents to use any lawful means to bring back law and order in the affected places.
