80th UNGA: VP Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation

Vice-President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, following the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidency announced yesterday.

The week-long event, which runs from tomorrow Monday, September 22 to Sunday, September 28, will commemorate the UN’s 80th anniversary and feature high-level general debates, bilateral meetings, and thematic discussions.

According to a statement signed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, between 3:00pm and 9:00pm (New York time).

In addition to his address, Shettima will represent Nigeria at a special Climate Summit for Heads of State and Government convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on September 24. At the summit, Nigeria is expected to unveil its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

The Vice President will also participate in a high-level roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing, hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto, and hold a series of bilateral engagements with global leaders and institutions.

After UNGA, Shettima will proceed to Frankfurt, Germany, for a strategic meeting with officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.

The 80th UNGA is expected to attract presidents, prime ministers, diplomats, and business leaders from across the globe as nations debate pressing issues, including peace, climate change, housing, and sustainable development.
