…As world leaders congratulate President Biden

President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria is looking forward to working with new US President, Joe Biden and the Vice President, Kamala Harris.

Buhari, in a statement issued yesterday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, warmly welcomed the inauguration of Biden and Harris.

The President expressed hope that their presidency would mark a strong point of cooperation and support for Nigeria as well as the African continent.

Buhari congratulated the leaders, and entire country on the successful transition, which marked an important historical inflection point for democracy as a system of government and for the global community as a whole.

World leaders have also said they were looking forward to working with US Joe Biden, as the Democrat was sworn-in as president after four turbulent years under Donald Trump.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, of Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, said he was “greatly relieved” Biden was replacing Trump as US president, calling it a “good day for democracy”.

Similarly, the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen said: “Europe is ready for a fresh start”;  while Iran’s President, Hassan Rouhani hailed the departure of “tyrant” Trump, Tehran having repeatedly called on Washington to lift sanctions imposed over its nuclear drive.

Also, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu urged Biden to “strengthen,” a long-standing alliance between the two countries.

Russia’s Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov alsovsaid Russia would seek “good relations with the United States”, while a foreign ministry statement said they expected a “more constructive” approach to upcoming arms control talks.

The French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said Biden’s commitments to rejoin the World Health Organisation, (WHO), which leads the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Paris climate treaty were “extremely important” following Trump’s exit from them.
