Protesting workers shut down $10bn NLNG Train-7 project

The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) $10 billion Train-7 Project has been shut down by protesting workers. The aggrieved workers are demanding issuance of their tax receipts and Tax Identification Number (TIN) codes. The workers also alleged the illegal deductions from their monthly pay to the tune of ₦150,000 under the guise of taxation. The workers, comprising of welders and fitters, picketed the administrative building of the SCD JV (Saipem, Chiyoda and Daewoo Joint Venture) in Bonny, Rivers State. The scheduled completion of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Train-7 Project may be stalled, following the lingering labour dispute between members of the National Association of Plant Operators and the management of Daewoo E&C Nigeria Limited. The South Korean firm, Daewoo, has been in an industrial crisis with its workers, who are protesting the refusal of the company to allow them to unionise under NAPO.
