The Sokoto state government has approved and disbursed ₦4.2 billion, representing 50 percent mobilisation fees, for the reconstruction of the Sokoto Central Market, which was destroyed by fire.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu announced the development while flagging-off the disbursement, describing it as the fulfilment of a key campaign promise and a decisive step towards restoring the economic heartbeat of the state.
According to the governor, the release of funds follows the resolution of several challenges that had delayed the project, including the successful reclamation of the market site. He noted that the removal of these obstacles now allows reconstruction work to proceed without hindrance.
“This marks the fulfilment of our campaign promise and a decisive step towards restoring the economic heartbeat of our state,” the governor said.
Governor Aliyu stressed that the reconstruction of the Central Market would revive livelihoods, support traders who lost their means of income to the inferno, and stimulate broader economic activities across Sokoto State.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-oriented development, assuring residents that the government remains focused on rebuilding critical infrastructure and strengthening the local economy.
The Sokoto Central Market is one of the state’s most important commercial hubs, serving thousands of traders and consumers daily. Its reconstruction is expected to significantly boost commerce, employment, and revenue generation upon completion.
