Nationwide blackout, as national grid crashes again

National grid crashes

Nigeria was plunged into another nationwide blackout yesterday, after the national electricity grid collapsed, cutting power supply across the country.

According to data from the grid, power generation nosedived from 2,917.83 megawatts to a mere 1.5 megawatts between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., effectively shutting down supply to nearly all Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos). Only Ibadan DisCo reportedly retained minimal allocation.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), in a statement issued at 11:23 a.m. via its X handle, confirmed the outage, attributing it to the sudden grid failure. “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today”, it stated, assuring customers that restoration efforts were underway.

The National Grid also announced that system restoration had commenced, with engineers working to stabilize supply.

Nigeria’s fragile grid has long been prone to collapse. Recall that in 2024 alone, it crashed 12 times, and over 100 times in the past decade. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), however, claimed in its July 2025 report that there were no grid disturbances in the first quarter of the year.

The latest collapse comes despite approvals granted earlier this year to six firms and a private university to generate and distribute electricity independently, in a bid to ease the strain on the national grid.
