NASS Leadership: Tension mounts, as forces plot to sack Akpabio

… “We’ll resist any attempt to impeach him” – Niger Delta Group

Top politicians strongly opposed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, are reportedly planning to oust him when the Senate resumes later this month.

According to the report, the forces are upset that the former Akwa-Ibom State governor is playing the role of a lap dog for President Tinubu rather than serving the overall interest of lawmakers and Nigerians.

The media report claimed that some senators had already met in Saudi Arabia to conclude the moves. However, the report failed to name any lawmaker involved in the sinister moves. Instead, it relied heavily on sources.

The ‘forces’ alleged that Akpabio’s closeness to the President has made him not pay full attention to his colleagues and work hard enough to meet the expectations of Nigerians despite the challenges in the country. Also, the ‘token’ slip statement by the Senate President in the upper chamber on the day of adjournment for the subsisting recess, is said to form the basis of the move to serve him the famous “banana peel” treatment.

However, in a swift reaction, leaders of a leading socio-political group, Citizens Network for Peace and Development (CNPDN), at the weekend, vowed to resist any sinister plan by some faceless and disgruntled senators to commence any impeachment moves against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

Secretary of the prominent South-South group, Francis Okereke Wainwei, in a statement made available to newsmen, explained why no serious Nigerian should take the threats seriously. He said in the last 10 years, no Senate President has spread the chairmanship of standing committees like Akpabio. According to him, opposition members as well as senators elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) got ‘juicy’ committees.

The pro-South South group said the senators pushing the narrative have a bigger plan to destabilise the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by causing unnecessary tension in the National Assembly.

The Bayelsa-born rights activist further challenged the purveyors of the purported impeachment moves to show their faces and be ready to accept the dire consequences.
