“Food imports banned, gunmen also banning farmers amidst prices inflation, how can the Nigerian poor survive?” – Mr. LA

A former senatorial candidate for the Kaduna-Central constituency, Hon. Lawal Adamu Usman, popularly known as Mr. LA, has called on the Federal Government to immediately open the nation’s borders to make life easier for the poor.

According to the promising politician, “There is no way for people to be going hungry and its leaders are thinking and wishing for any progress.

He further queried: “The borders were closed to prevent the importation of weapons, now has it stopped the illegal importation of arms?

According to him, “Only improvements to the Customs, Immigration and other security agencies should be made, by paying them a fair salary and other benefits; If that is done, God-willing, everything will be fine. Or else, banning the importation of food while we are not able to grow our own food due to insecurity doesn’t make any common sense”.

Even if not all the borders are open to everyone, the federal government should make a special contingency plan, like the manner it assisted poultry farmers sometime ago by ordering maize from neighbouring countries; because currently, the poultry farmers are starving and not their chickens. Building people’s capacities is what the Government should focus on.

He further said, “We are closer to our people and we feel the hardships they are suffering as a result of the security and economic crisis. Given the current situation of the poor what is of utmost significance to them at this critical period, is to make life easier and safer for them to survive.

“Food prices have skyrocketed almost everywhere in the northern markets; only this week while purchasing maize and sorghum, which based on my calculations, one mudu, or loka (a measure), costs N400 is sold in the market; that is no small threat.

“How can the Government eradicate poverty in this kind of situation?”, Mr. La lamented.
