The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, (NSCIA), has urged the Federal Government to boldly expose those behind the recurring false claims of a “genocidal campaign against Christians in Nigeria”, saying such allegations are aimed at discrediting the country and deepening division.

In an issued statement yesterday, the Council commended government agencies and patriotic Nigerians who refuted the allegations but faulted the government for not identifying the local instigators – whom it described as elements within the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) exploiting religion for foreign sympathy and material gain.

The NSCIA said it is aware of deliberate attempts by some political and religious actors to incite a religious war, citing past inflammatory comments during the 2023 elections and recent appeals to the U.S. Congress by church leaders. It added that terrorist attacks in Nigeria affect both Muslims and Christians, referencing U.S. reports that show indiscriminate violence.

Expressing concern over what it called “bias and manipulation” in public discourse, the Council criticised some federal agencies and media houses for allegedly amplifying divisive narratives. It also decried policies it believes marginalise Muslims, such as the NAICOM circular on Takaful insurance.

Reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s unity, the NSCIA maintained that those peddling falsehoods are the real enemies of the nation and vowed to continue promoting peace and mutual co-existence despite provocations.
