Speaking on a television programme yesterday, Fayemi, who briefly served as a minister in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, admitted that the party had failed to deliver on key promises made to the Nigerian people.

“We have not succeeded in achieving everything we promised”, Fayemi said, acknowledging the APC’s inability to bring the desired change to the country. He also noted that the party’s leadership, including himself, should have done more to improve the nation’s condition.

“We all have reasons, but we must apologise to the Nigerian people. It’s not just incompetence that led to our failure, but also the structural obstacles that made progress difficult. However, we still haven’t done enough; and for that, I apologise”, Fayemi added.

The APC, which came to power in 2015 with Buhari’s victory over then-President Goodluck Jonathan, has faced growing criticism from Nigerians. Many feel the country’s situation has worsened over the years under APC rule, a sentiment echoed following Buhari’s handover of power to Bola Tinubu in May 2023. Tinubu’s controversial removal of the fuel subsidy on his first day in office plunged millions of Nigerians into poverty, intensifying the frustrations of the public.
