Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the ‘Great Green Wall’ Initiative, while addressing the Ministerial Segment of the ‘pan-African Agency for the Great Green Wall’ in Dakar, Senegal.

The Great Green Wall represents Africa’s collective effort to combat desertification, restore degraded land, and strengthen climate resilience.
In his speech, the Minister highlighted Nigeria’s progress under the initiative despite existing challenges. He said the country has produced over 37 million free seedlings and reclaimed approximately 12,506 hectares of degraded land across 11 frontline states.
He reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering dedication to the project, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. “This commitment is crucial for the initiative’s success and for addressing the pressing issues of desertification, land degradation, and climate change in Africa”, he stated.
