APC to proceed with presidential primary without statutory delegates despite court judgment

…’No APC presidential aspirant’s been disqualified’ – Adamu

The ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), says it will proceed with its special convention without statutory delegates despite the pronouncement by the Federal High Court in Kano.

This is just as its National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, has said no presidential aspirant on the party’s platform has been disqualified.

Recall that the court, on Friday, held that statutory delegates can participate in the primaries of political parties in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution.

The spokesperson of the APC, Felix Morka, told newsmen that the party will proceed with its convention using the elected delegates as provided in section 84(8) of the Electoral Act.

Morka said the APC was not a party to the case, as only the National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, was included in the suit. He noted that Adamu is not APC.

In the new Electoral Act, the lawmakers had excluded statutory delegates from persons that can vote at congresses and national conventions.

The APC has already approved elected delegates, 3 per LGA, to take part in the presidential primary. The ruling party has also held its other primaries, State and Legislative without statutory delegates.

The main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also used elected delegates for its presidential primary, which produced Atiku Abubakar.

Meanwhile, the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, has said no presidential aspirant on the party’s platform has been disqualified, contrary to reports that the Chief John Oyegun-led screening committee screened out 10 aspirants.

The APC chairman, who stated this while speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday, said none of the 23 aspirants had been disqualified from contesting at the party’s presidential primary scheduled to hold from Monday to Wednesday.

The ruling party will hold the convention to elect its presidential candidate for the 2023 election from June 6 to 8.
