…Senate honours slain protesters
A member of the House of Representatives, Teejay Yusuf, has called for dialogue as a way to resolve some of the issues raised by #EndSARS protesters.
Yusuf, who is a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal constituency in the National Assembly, stated these yesterday, in an issued statement.
The lawmaker also called for payment of compensations for victims of police brutality in the country. According to him, the best that can happen now is to pull back from the brink, have frank dialogue and demand the institution of lasting corrective measures that may become part of our constitutional reforms.
The lawmaker noted without effective dialogue and a timely resolution of the recent face-off that started as ‘EndSARS’ protest, Nigeria’s political elites and protesting youth stand the risk of huge collective losses.
The lawmaker, while lamenting the loss of lives and criminal opportunism of hoodlums, stated that irrespective of political party affiliations and ethnic origin, the entire political class, youth and other stakeholders across the federation stand to lose a lot if normalcy is not speedily restored.
In the same vein, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has said the House will make provision in the 2021 budget to pay compensation to families of those who died during the nationwide #EndSARS protest.
The Speaker also said that the resolve of the House to ensure that a comprehensive reforms is carried out within the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) to make it people-friendly.
Similarly, The Senate has observed a minute silence in honour of the Late Jimoh Isiaka and other youths allegedly killed by police operatives during the #EndSARS protest in Ogbomoso. This followed a motion by the lawmaker representing Oyo North, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, during plenary.
The motion was titled: “EndSARS Protest: The death of Jimoh Isiaka and the attack on the palace of Soun of Ogbomosoland: Need to put our security operatives on their toes.”
