Many feared dead in Abia building collapse

A three-storey building under construction along Azikiwe Road, in the commercial city of Aba, Abia State, at the early hours of Wednesday morning collapsed after a torrential rainfall on Tuesday night, killing two persons on the spot, even as it reportedly trapped five others in the rubble.

It was, however, gathered that one person was rescued from the rubble and rushed to the hospital where he is receiving treatment.

It was learnt that the deceased and the survivor of the collapsed building were alleged destitute who usually take refuge in the building and were there when the structures came crashing on them.

When reporters visited the collapsed building, no excavator or other any earthmoving equipment was seen on ground to help in the rescue efforts, but sympathizers managed to wade in through some open parts of the collapsed building to rescue the survivor.

Use of substandard materials by the contractor is suspected to be the cause of the accident.
